SERPENT & THE SWAN @ MBFWA 2013 (MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA)
Serpent and the Swan’s SS13/14 collection, ‘Insecta Botanica’, finds inspiration from the idea of growth and the inherent relationship between plant and human life cycles. This show stood out for me as it was not a traditional runway like many others in MBFWA, but instead a live model exhibition. The collection was very raw and very much in touch with the more dark and morbid elements of nature. Showcasing a self-designed ‘Botanica’ print inspired from 18th Century botanical plates, insect dissection and anatomical drawings of teeth. The palette was very soft and muted, with the use of lavender leathers, wheat hues, dirty mint, faded stripes and severe black. This androgynous collection translated the juxtaposition of the hard and soft elements of nature with leather harnesses wrapped over soft dresses, relaxed tees and shirts finished off with sheer white trousers, grounded organza, loose mesh knits, raw linen and fluid silk dresses.
